About intelligence analysis
Intelligence analysis brings together the different intelligence research strands for a topic. The analysis provides background (situational awareness), and explanation for events. Analysis can include a study of potential outcomes and estimates of the probability of each occurring. Analysis may also consider options for handling a situation. In the most dramatic situations, analysis indicates that current thinking or interpretation is incorrect and the wrong responses are being used – when that happens a strategic notice is issued.
Analysts stretch across multiple types of research material (comms, human sources, aerial reconnaissance, open source, etc). They tend to focus on specific areas, like the supply of materials and expertise for production of nuclear weapons.
